Growing old disgracefully in Thailand is an occupational hazard for retired ex-pats who just want to be ‘Living the Dream’. For a small group of ex-pats living in Pattaya, living the dream is sitting in The Sloan Square Bar and playing dominos, obviously putting the world to rights while they play.
The landlord is Gary Sloan. He is the sort of person you either love or hate. Some people love to hate him and some people hate the fact that they love him. His skin is as thick as a sprung mattress. He leads this group of ex-pats in a series of adventure and misadventure. It is an emotional roller coaster ride of highs and lows that will stay in your memory long after you have finished reading this book. They are more than just close friends. They are a band of brothers. This is their story. A story you will be happy they shared.

This book turned out to be fantastic. At first I thought it would be a little slow but I quickly got into all of the characters and enjoyed their stories, trips, and personalities. It took me a while to finish since I had a lot of work and travel, but every time I picked this book up, I went right to Thailand and envisioned being there and being part of the group. I actually went to Pattaya but couldn't go to the bar due to my tour, but I'll be going back and can't wait to check out the real Sloan Square Bar. Great book. Highly recommended!Product details

Living The Dream edition by Guy Lilburne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A top read. The characters were very real and I could not stop thinking who they reminded me of. Very good story once again from Guy Liburne.
Entertaining and (surprisingly) emotional read! Recommended.
Started slow while we meet the gang at The Sloan Square Bar. Then we get involved in the successes and failures of each member of the group. We get deeper drawn in throughout the book. Good read.
This is a nostalgia book for expatriates living in Southeast Asia. Although the stories and anecdotes are set in Thailand, specifically Pattaya, these same stories could have been told with varying degrees of truthfulness in settings of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and other locations in Thailand. I know this because I am one of these “professional expats,” I have lived in the countries mentioned, and I have heard of or lived all the accounts from all of the characters in this book.
These stories take place in “Sloany’s Bar” in Pattaya, Thailand. A few kilometers down the road in Bangkok, the same club would be called the “Texas Lone Star” in Washington Square, Soi 22 Sukhumvit. It closed a few years ago with the death of its owner “Big George.”
Typical stories you will find here include the benevolent owner who would always spot the down and out expat for a few dollars, at least for a while. Both Sloany and George did that.
You will find the story of the expat married to a local for several years who wakes up to find his wife gone, his bank account drained and, no matter how diligent the search, the wife will never be found. (She went back to her village under her original name—a very common story)
You will find the expat who rescued his wife from a life of prostitution before she became ruined by the life
.
You will find the story, this is truer specifically in Thailand, where the expat was engaged to the girl for many months, decided to get married, only to find “her” man package was bigger than his.
There are the tales of men who found out they liked guys better than girls, such as anecdotes in this book.
This is not a book for tourists; they would not have the time to replicate most of the experiences related here.
A minor aside Where are the books written by female expats? I know there are some; I have met several but I have yet to discover a book written by them.
didn't like this set of books compared to the detective series... they kept my interest, read them, and laughed a couple times... but overall, not my cup of tea...
I have read all of Guy Lilburne's books and he always delivers a great story and always worth the price. In this case the story of an ex-pat bar and the guys that hang out there. The author always creates great characters and by the end of the first few chapters you feel as though you know them all. I can't wait for his next book.
Loved every second. Laughed out loud the entire book and had a tear towards the end. Loved it so much I ordered a real copy for my father for fathers day. I think he will love it but he's never been to Thailand so I could be wrong. I lived in Thailand for years and have a Thai wife as well and that probably makes it more interesting for me but the book is so funny I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't laugh. I just left Thailand last month before I read the book or I would be trying to find the Sloan square bar. Maybe next time
